Crocheting in the round can be a bit of a challenge for any crocheter. It is
important to have a crochet marker to keep track of your first stitch on every
row as you progress with the pattern. You must count each stitch after
completing a row to make sure you are counting correctly. It is imperative to
change the stitch marker each time you start a new row. It makes the project so
much easier when you do these two things. When you learn how to round crochet a
baby hat, you will get a good grasp on crocheting in the round.
The following pattern is for a newborn baby. It should measure 18 single
crochets or 16 rows at about 4 inches.
Chain six. Join with slip stitch in first chain stitch to make a circle. Place
the marker for beginning of the round. Slide it through the yarn in your stitch.
Row 1: Crochet 12 single crochets in the ring. Join with slip stitch. Remove
marker
Row
2: *Single crochet in the first single crochet. Place your marker, then single
crochet in each of the remaining 11 single crochets. You should have 12
stitches. Remove marker.
Row
3: *Single crochet in the first single crochet. Place marker. Remember to do
this at the beginning of each round from now on. Single crochet 2 times in the
next crochet, single crochet in the next crochet,* repeat to the marker. Remove
marker and remember to do so at the end of each row from now on. You should now
have 18 stitches.
Row
4: *1 single crochet in each of the next 2 single crochets, 2 single crochets in
next single, * repeat around for an increase to 24 stitches.
Row
5: *1 single crochet in the next 3 single crochets, 2 single crochets in next
single crochet, *repeat around until you end at the row marker. You should have
30 stitches.
Row
6: *1 single crochet in the next 4 single crochets, 2 single crochets in the
next single crochet, * repeat around to row marker. You should have 36 stitches.
Row
7: * 1 single crochet in next 5 single crochets, 2 single crochets in next
single crochet, * repeat to marker. You should have 42 stitches.
Row 8: * 1 single crochet in next 6 single crochets, 2 single crochets in next
single crochet, * repeat to marker. You should have 48 stitches.
Row
9 to 12: Single crochet in each single crochet around. Move your marker and
count stitches in each row.
Row 13: * 1 single crochet in 7 single crochets, 2 single crochets in next
single crochet, * repeat around.
You should now have 54 stitches.
Row 14 through 18: Single crochet in each single crochet around. Move marker and
count stitches in each row. You will have 54 stitches.
Slip stitch in each single crochet around the last row of the round crochet baby
hat. Cut the yarn at under 1/2 inch and weave the end into the stitches to hide
it.
